Oil on panel “Saint Tropez”, Gabriel Dechamps, 17th century. XX - France
Wonderful oil on panel where we see a port scene of the city of Saint Tropez. Signed by Gabriel Deschamps in the lower right corner, it is in very good condition. This is a beautiful, serene scene created with loose brush strokes of blues, reds and browns. The contrast of dark tones in the foreground of the port stands out, and the luminous, clear and soft tones of the city; as well as the magnificent light treatment. Complex composition, the viewer is introduced to the scene thanks to the boats moored in the foreground as well as the action of the man in the dock. The work presents a magnificent frame in the bohemian Montparnasse style.
Gabriel Deschamps was an artist born in France in 1919, in Bonneville. He became known as a painter of marine and genre scenes in the south of France. His paintings stand out because they perfectly capture the fresh and vibrant colors as well as the intense quality of the light of the region. This is an artist who has the ability to bring an authentic sense of life to his paintings, who mastered and refined his skills to create pieces with fluid brush strokes and vibrant tones.
He painted mainly scenes from the south of France and the Mediterranean coast and held numerous exhibitions in Paris, Algiers, Oran and Casablanca. Many of his works are present in important private collections in Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, the United States and Argentina.
Saint Tropez is a French coastal city well known among artists and regular people. It was a fishing village that was “rediscovered” by the neo-impressionist painter Paul Signac. The city then gained a bohemian reputation, attracting many intellectuals and painters. The port was destroyed in the Second World War but was rebuilt in 1950. Its reputation for glamor and luxury was established when the film “And God Created Woman” starring Brigitte Bardot was filmed.

Olio su tavola "Saint Tropez", Gabriel Dechamps, XVII secolo. XX - Francia
