“Art Deco Lady” sculpture, Demetre Chiparus, 19th century. XX – France
Exquisite Art Deco sculpture signed by Demetre Chiparus (1886 - 1947) that represents, with timeless charm, a graceful lady accompanied by a parrot and a turkey. It reflects one of the most popular themes during the 1920s, the appreciation of the female form. The young woman appears in motion, she seems to get up while a parrot sits on her hand to eat what she offers it. Rich clothing, very worked and decorated, subtle folds that affect movement. The decoration is completed with his hat, matching his delicate shoes. Marble base of two types, green and yellow.
At these times, women become the great protagonists of the cultural and social scene, something that is reflected in the works of Chiparus. It is about a woman who fights for her freedom and wants to find her own personality.
Demetre Chiparus, one of the most important names in Romanian sculpture, presented an innovative style in the 1920s, standing out for its decorativeness, luxury and elegance. He moved to Paris at an early age to complete his training at the School of Fine Arts, where he perfected his skills. He then began to develop his own language in the Art Deco style, with a first series of decorative sculptures about children, exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1914. Later, when he acquired a mature style, he began to be inspired by the Russian ballet, the French theater, or the first silent film productions, performing, above all, works of female representation, such as ballet and cabaret dancers. Chiparus' pieces were made in foundries and factories that were also used by his contemporaries, such as that of Edmond Etling, or later in Las Neveux by J. Lehmann.
Art Deco was a purely decorative movement. In their work, artists generally did not aim to express feelings or emotions, but rather to create objects of attractive design, balanced and that reflected the time and society in which they lived. The Russian ballets were key in the development of this movement, since their productions were very influential, impacting fashion and decoration designs. Authors such as Demetre Chiparus or Paul Philippe represented this explosion of color and expressiveness, inspired above all by the pieces of Sergei Diaghilev, Vaslav NIjisky or Ida Rubinstein. For example, the work "Dancer with a Hoop" (Danseuse au cerceau), created in 1928, was inspired by the magnificent dancer Zoula de Boncza.

scultura "Art Deco Lady", Demetre Chiparus, XIX secolo. XX - Francia
