DAN PARRY-JONES b. 1971, United Kingdom A textured bright colour palette and sweet nostalgic figures brimming with images of palm trees, swimming pools and timeless Palm Springs- like mountainous scenery are all ingredients mixed media artist Dan Parry-Jones uses to create his memorable works of art. A graduate of University of Derby (1994, BA Hons in Graphic Design) and Winchester School of Art (1991), Parry-Jones is fascinated by the relationship between the manmade and nature. Parry-Jones experiments with a style of painting that continues to evolve after spending time in Europe, particularly southern Spain; these new paintings juxtapose elements both organic and artificial, as panoramic mountain ranges provide a backdrop to flat, still pools and brightly painted walls. His work bears the same stylistic hallmarks that draw influence from Richard Dierbenkorn and Robert Rauschenburg, with shapes of flat colour set against highly textured areas where paint and glued paper has been scraped back to reveal many layers beneath. In sharp contrast to this scarred and sanded background, are sharply focused areas of screen-printed detail featuring his distinctively nostalgic subject matter; kids, cars, buildings, that bring the viewer back to a bygone time on the fringes of our memory.
