Bernard Schultze was born on May 31, 1915 in Schneidermühl in West Prussia (today Pila in Poland). After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of Art Education in Berlin and at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1934 to 1939. Schultze was a soldier from 1939 to 1945. In 1944, the entire early work was burned during the attack on Berlin.
from 1947 Schultze lived in Frankfurt am Main, where he created his first informal pictures in 1951. Bernard Schultze developed a very personal style of gestural-abstract painting. In 1952 he took part in the Quadriga exhibition in the Zimmergalerie Franck in Frankfurt. In 1955 he took part in the exhibition of the group "ZEN 49" and in the exhibition "Peintures et sculptures non-figuratives en Allemagne d'aujourd'hui" at the Cercle Volney in Paris. Bernard Schultze was also involved in the exhibition "Living Color - Couleur vivante" in Wiesbaden in 1957 and in the exhibition "A New Direction in Painting" at the Kunsthalle Mannheim in 1957/58.
In 1955 Schultze married the painter Ursula Bluhm. Around this time, the first relief paintings were created using various materials applied to the canvas. The so-called "tabuskris" (tabulae scriptae), created from 1957 onwards, which oscillate between painting and drawing, were followed by the "Migofs" in 1961. Schultze uses this freely invented name for his sculptural structures, which represent artificial and natural creatures.
from 1951 onwards, Bernard Schultze regularly stayed in Paris for some time. The first trip to New York took place in 1964, followed by others. In 1968 Schultze moved his residence from Frankfurt to Cologne. In 1972 Schultze became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. In the 1970s, Bernard Schultze again concentrated more on panel paintings. He also integrates the previously sculptural “Migofs” into it. from 1974 onwards his works became increasingly large format.
Bernard Schultze created an impressive early work on which he worked intensively until shortly before his death. He is one of the great German abstract painters of the second half of the 20th century. Bernard Schultze dies on April 14, 2005 in Cologne.
